The Next Steps for J-1 Scholars
Preparing for Entry into the United States
After receiving your official offer as a visiting scholar or professor, submitting financial documentation, and receiving your DS-2019, you must obtain a J-1 visa before entering the U.S.
Obtaining your Visa
Schedule an interview early at your local U.S. Embassy or Consulate. All exchange visitor applicants must bring:
- DS-2019 Form: Issued by 海角社区.
- DS-160 Confirmation Page: Printed barcode from the completed online application via website.
- Valid Passport: Must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.
- Photograph: One 2x2 inch photo meeting nonimmigrant visa requirements.
- One (1) 2 inch x2 inch photograph. See the required photo format explained in .
- Additional Materials & Fees: Any local embassy requirements, including visa application fee receipts:

Two-Year Home-Country Physical Presence Requirement (212e)
Certain J-1 visitors are subject to section 212(e) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, requiring a return to your home country for at least two years after your program. If you cannot fulfill this requirement, you must obtain a Department of Homeland Security waiver before changing status or re-entering the U.S. in specific visa categories. Crossing the Border
Carry these items in your hand luggage (do not pack them in checked baggage):
- Passport with valid J-1 visa
- Form DS-2019
- Proof of SEVIS I-901 fee payment ()
- Proof of funding
At the Port of Entry:
- Arrival Records: Air and sea arrivals are processed electronically; land border entries will receive a stamped I-94 card in their passport.
- Customs Inspection: State clearly to the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer that you are an exchange visitor at 海角社区.
- Timing: Do not attempt to enter the U.S. more than 30 days before the start date listed on your DS-2019. Arriving earlier requires entry as a tourist, after which you must leave and re-enter the U.S. in J-1 status.
Once You Are In the United States
- Safeguard Documents: Keep your DS-2019 and I-94 secure, as they verify your lawful status and work eligibility.
- Mandatory Check-In: Check in with the Office of International Student and Global Scholar Services within 10 days of arrival with all immigration documents so your SEVIS record can be registered.
- Orientation: Programs lasting 3 weeks or longer require attendance at International Student and Scholar Orientation and SEVIS Registration. You are legally responsible for maintaining your J-1 status.
